There Is An Unlimited Range Of Items That Appeal To Collectors, And There Are Countless Different Reasons Why Individuals Collect Things

What makes someone want to start collecting things? It’s a fact that there is a whole long list of objects that collectors look for and buy, from expensive paintings all the way to football programmes. There are different reasons for collecting things too. Some people simply want to have a complete set of whatever they collect, others collect due to the rarity of an item or how much it is valued at. And many people simply collect things because they are interested in them.

As a child I collected postage stamps. All the stamps I could track down! I was not a selective collector, I just wanted to get as many stamps as I could. I was lucky that my father worked in the international office of a bank and so he could gather up the stamps from all the overseas envelopes that turned up and bring them home for me. And although I wasn’t concerned with anything much more than gaining lots of stamps, I did teach myself quite a lot about world geography as I would look closely at new acquisitions and spend time looking up any new countries in my world atlas. All that staring at stamps and maps when I was so young – it won’t come as a surprise that I need Laser eye surgery.

From stamps, I move on to postcards. And again, it was mostly about the amount I could find as opposed to any special kind of postcard. I bought them from my pocket money if we went visiting somewhere for the day, and made sure that I got any that were posted to the family by friends who had gone somewhere exotic. I might have got the postcard concept from my mother as my uncle was a steward for an airline and he posted her cards from many of the places that he went. And there is the difference – her collection was very specific in it’s content. I just wanted large numbers of postcards and decided it was a real bonus when a relative located a large quantity of them whilst helping with a house clearance and then handed them to me.

After I left home I had a phase of investing in a range of collectable replica cottages, and although I still own them I really see them more as twee pieces than anything else now. A lot of the ones I possess are numbered collector’s pieces, so fairly rare, and I think possibly this was the point where I developed from collecting amounts of items to collecting carefully chosen items. Possibly it’s all down to how the adult brain is different from the child’s? If the re-sale market was stronger at the moment, I would probably try and sell them to pay for my Laser eye surgery but I don’t want to get rid of them for less than they cost me!

Today, my collecting is music related. I collect anything recorded by my favourite bands along with any memorabilia or promotional issues that I can track down. When an album is released on CD and vinyl, I have to buy both. Sometimes I will buy an additional copy of the vinyl so that I can get it personalised for my collection. Memorabilia and promotional items are much easier to find than you would expect as well. The record labels will give items to radio stations and journalists, but ultimately once the music is available for the public to buy, many of the items end up in the public domain.

The more famous the artist and the more money there is supporting the campaign, the more ridiculous the items that get sent out. I’ve seen good quality CD players posted out with the album glued inside (not sure quite how that works with the Laser eye beam needing to read the CD to play it!), countless different kinds of clothing, fake road signs, enormous banners which would cover the side of a house and much more. It does seem quite disproportionate when giving anything away to get fans to actually purchase the album is frowned upon, but giving promotional items to people to sing the praises of the product in the first place is very much encouraged. With the amount of money presently being used to publicise manufactured pop acts, it’s maybe only a matter of time before journalists are being handed vouchers for complimentary cosmetic surgery or Laser eye treatment to encourage them to write a good review. Luckily, I collect a couple of considerably less hyped acts and so can quite easily expand my collection without breaking the bank.
