Pet him and say "I love you tigger" but he walks a few steps and goes to bed. This means that I can prove that I love, but the way they understand?

This may seem a direct answer strange, but here it is: when you get on your knees and hum to him. I found this works best when my cat had kittens. I was with them at all times and found that when I put on the floor hummed with them and are all gathered around me, close as they could and fell asleep. I kept a kitten I call Eddie and all I have to do when I want calm, is humming. It always works!
